Gum Disease in Children

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is caused by harmful bacteria that build up on your child’s teeth and gums, forming a sticky film called plaque. This bacteria can infect the gums, leading to gum recession, tooth loss, and other oral health issues if left untreated.

Symptoms of Gum Disease

Our pediatric dentist will check for signs of gum disease during your child’s regular exams, but there are also several symptoms you can watch for at home. These may include:

  • Red, swollen, or sore gums
  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • Gum recession
  • Loose or separating teeth (with abnormal spacing)
  • Recurring bad breath
  • Pus between the teeth and gums
  • Changes in your child’s bite or jaw alignment

Preventing Gum Disease

Good oral hygiene and regular dental visits are key to preventing gum disease. We recommend that your child:

  • Brushes their teeth at least twice a day using fluoridated toothpaste
  • Flosses daily
  • Uses mouthwash daily
  • Eats a balanced, healthy diet with limited sugary foods
  • Visits our pediatric dentist twice a year for routine cleanings and exams

Gum Disease Treatment

If gum disease is diagnosed, our pediatric dentist will assess the severity of the condition before recommending treatment. Mild cases of gum disease can often be managed with a deep cleaning called scaling and root planing. Antibiotic treatments may also be suggested. In more severe cases, surgical procedures or other treatments may be necessary. We will discuss all available options with you to help you make an informed decision about your child’s treatment plan.
